The Black Hills Preservation Project -- Protecting Our Land and Water Supply 💧
The Black Hills Preservation Project is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization in South Dakota that advocates against commercial mining on public lands to protect the region's natural environment, drinking water, and wildlife habitat.
“Together for the Black Hills” -- Protect our water. Preserve our forest. Sustain our home. Our mission is to unite the community in conserving our limited water supply and protecting the Black Hills National Forest. Join The List Today!
Mission and Goals
The primary goal of the Black Hills Preservation Project is to prevent new commercial mining operations in the Black Hills National Forest. Key aspects of their mission include:
Protecting Water Resources: The organization emphasizes the risk of groundwater contamination from mining activities, as many residents rely on private wells for drinking water.
Preserving Natural Beauty and Wildlife: They work to maintain the natural landscape and protect it from the noise, light, and general environmental pollution associated with commercial development and mining.
Advocacy and Legislation: The group engages in political activism, including petitions and lobbying efforts, to amend the 1872 Mining Law and designate public lands in the Black Hills as off-limits to all commercial mining interests (e.g., gold, lithium, uranium).
The Black Hills Preservation Project was formally founded in June 2024 by local residents concerned about a specific commercial mining proposal (the Newark Exploratory Drilling Project by F3 Gold). Their activities include:
Community Organizing and Education: They organize local residents, provide information on potential environmental and health harms, and educate the public on the importance of land preservation.
Petition Drives: They actively collect signatures on petitions to demonstrate to South Dakota lawmakers the widespread opposition to commercial mining operations.
Water Testing Advocacy: The organization urges local residents to regularly test their drinking water to monitor for potential contamination from nearby drilling operations.
