The Black Hills Preservation Project -- Protecting Our Land and Water Supply 💧
GOOD NEWS: So far so good. With your help and support...
By December 2024, the company’s land claims had shrunk 61% from their 2017 peak down to 22,500 acres. (Wow, they still ahve have many?)
While the company still controls roughly 35 square miles, this reduction significantly lowers the threat to clean water in the Black Hills.
Basic Information:
The Newark Exploratory Drilling Project is a mineral exploration initiative led by the mining company F3 Gold. It involves drilling deep core samples to search for gold deposits within the Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota.
Key facts about the project include:
Location: The project targets national forest land located about 4 miles west of Custer, South Dakota, situated directly upstream from local communities along French Creek and connects to the City of Custer SD.
The Scope: The U.S. Forest Service approved the plan for F3 Gold to drill 36 exploratory sites using diamond-tipped drills to sample depths of up to 3,000 feet. (Can you imagine that they died this?)
Public Opposition: The project has faced intense pushback from local residents, environmental groups like the Black Hills Clean Water Alliance and the Black Hills Preservation Project. Opponents are deeply concerned that commercial mining in the area poses a severe threat to local drinking water, clean rivers, and the sacred natural landscape of the Black Hills.
